Chapter 08: Edible fruit and nuts; peel of citrus fruit or melons

CHAPTER 8: EDIBLE FRUIT AND NUTS; PEEL OF

• 1. This chapter does not cover inedible nuts or fruit.
• 2. Chilled fruit and nuts are to be classified in the same headings as the corresponding fresh fruit and nuts.
• 3. Dried fruit or dried nuts of this chapter may be partially rehydrated, or treated for the following purposes:
  • (a) For additional preservation or stabilization (for example, by moderate heat treatment, sulfuring, the addition of sorbic acid or potassium sorbate),
  • (b) To improve or maintain their appearance (for example, by the addition of vegetable oil or small quantities of glucose syrup), provided that they retain the character of dried fruits or dried nuts.
• 4. Heading 0812 applies to fruit and nuts which have been treated solely to ensure their provisional preservation during transport or storage prior to use (for example, by sulfur dioxide gas, in brine, in sulfur water or in other preservative solutions), provided they remain unsuitable for immediate consumption in that state.

• 1. No allowance shall be made for dirt or other impurities in nuts of any kind, shelled or not shelled.

• 2. For the purposes of statistical reporting numbers 0807.11.3020, 0807.11.3060, 0807.11.4020 and 0807.11.4060, "miniature type" watermelons (also marketed as mini, personal, personal-size or personal mini), refers to watermelons weighing at least 0.91 kg (2 pounds) but not over 3.18 kg (7 pounds).
• 3. For the purposes of statistical reporting numbers 0810.10.2020, 0810.10.2060, 0810.10.4020 and 0810.10.4060, strawberries "for processing" refers to strawberries that are conventionally and certified organically grown and then shipped loose (not placed into any other containers such as pints or plastic clamshells) in plastic flats not weighing more than 0.91 kg (2 pounds), excluding the weight of the plastic flats. These strawberries are sometimes called "cannery" "freezer" or "juice" strawberries. They are not sold for immediate consumption on the fresh market.
